Coquina Law Group is proud to announce that W. Ashby Underhill, has achieved Board Certification in Aviation Law by the Florida Bar. Board Certified Attorneys are also referred to as Board Certified Specialist (B.C.S.).
Board Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in the areas of law approved for certification. Board Certified Attorneys are “Evaluated for Professionalism and Tested for Expertise.” Approximately 7% of Florida attorneys have earned board certification in one of the 26 specialty areas of law. Ashby is 1 of 42 attorneys Board Certified in Aviation Law by the Florida Bar.
To become a Board Certified Specialist in Aviation Law by the Florida bar, an attorney must have: practiced law for at least 5 years; demonstrate substantial involvement in Aviation Law – 30% or more of practice area; pass satisfactory peer review of competence in aviation law field as well as character, ethics and professionalism in the practice of law; 60 hours of approved aviation law certification continuing legal education in the 3 years immediately preceding application; and pass a written exam.
The Aviation Law Board Certification exam test the applicants on a wide range of law applicable to the practice of aviation law. The exam covers 9 areas of law which are:
- Aeronautics & Space Law
- National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
- Registration/Recording & Security Interests
- Airport Operations & Land Use
- Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Enforcement
- International Treaties & Conventions
- Air Taxi Operations – Part 135
- Airline Labor Law
Ashby is a member of the International Air & Transportation Safety Bar Association (IATSBA), Lawyer Pilots Bar Association (LPBA), Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association (AOPA), National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), and the St. Augustine Airport Pilots Association (SAAPA).
